8 Tools You Need to Build a Birdhouse!

Build a birdhouse with these eight primary tools! Do you have a heart for our lovely furry friends in the sky? There are a lot of ways how you can design and build them a temporary home or shelter that you can hang from a tree or somewhere in your outdoors. This is considered a simple woodworking project for kids and a fun pastime for adults because of its uncomplicated methods.

But don’t get us wrong, building a birdhouse is indeed a fun activity, but this doesn’t mean that you should sacrifice its durability and the sturdiness of it. Keep in mind, that most birds decide to plant roots, or even lay eggs in these birdhouses. Therefore it is of utmost importance that you know how to build one that can last the test of time and also some weather conditions.

What are the features of a good birdhouse?

Like us, when finding the right house, there are certain features that we want to see. However, in this case, birds are not humans, therefore we’re in luck because they’re not the choosy kind. But, there are humble features that they want to see in a birdhouse before planting roots there. These are the simple conditions that they live by…

Your birdhouse needs to assure that the birds won’t get wet.

Considering that most birdhouses are out in the open, this also means that they are exposed to environmental elements and (sometimes) unfavorable weather conditions. If they are to stay in the house you made, make sure that it has a sturdy and drooping roof to keep the rainfall from, well, falling.

Remember to have drainage systems inside the birdhouse! You can never be too sure of wooden homes unless it is tested to undergo harsh environmental elements. But let’s not wait for that to happen and just put the holes on the flooring of your birdhouse. It doesn’t need to be big. Just enough for an ample amount of water to easily flow.

Thick walls for better ventilation!

You want our flighty friends to be comfortable when they’re inside the birdhouse, right? One of the things that can make them at ease is opting to use thicker woods to build the walls of your birdhouse. This will regulate the temperature so your birds won’t be too hot or too cold.

A perch is an aesthetic feature, yes. But it can also be an invitation for predators.

Make it a safe house for the birds and do not put a perch outside. Although it’s a common feature that seems fun and birds might enjoy, it can also be a leeway for predators to enter the birdhouse premises. Actually, adding a perch is considered unnecessary for most, so better just leave it out of the blueprint.

Make sure it has the right entrance size!

What’s the use of a birdhouse if the bird can’t get inside it? This is also why you should specialize in what kind of bird are you planning on storing inside your birdhouse. Evidently, you can’t put a pigeon inside a sparrow-sized hole, that’ll just be brutal for the pigeon.

Consider inputting a hinged door.

Don’t entirely close off your birdhouse to the world. Consider the fact that you also need to do constant cleaning and monitoring on your birds, so it’s better to have bigger access than simply leaving the small circular one in front.
