A good foundation comes from quality concrete. For first-timers, mixing concrete might be a frustrating endeavor. A proper introduction and a tutorial should be given before one starts his/her concrete mixing journey. In a nutshell, working with concrete is an artform on its own. Many find it a valuable material that’s strong, dependable, adaptable, and durable.
The majority of the construction projects that we have actually require concrete and this is one of the reasons why people in the industry need to know how to properly mix. With fine concrete on your hands, you’re not far from building anything! From countertops, vanity tables, and sinks. The possibilities are endless!
What you’ll need!
Mixing isn’t all that complicated when you’ve got the hang of it. But first, you need to know all the tools needed to do it right. Here are some of them according to Family Handyman…
Tools you need!
- Bucket
- Dust mask
- Hoe
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Stiff bristle brush
- Wheelbarrow
Materials Required
- Concrete mix
Each tool listed has a significant function in the mixing process. But above all else, some of these tools are mainly for the worker’s health and safety. These are the rubber gloves and safety glasses.
Remember, mixing concrete can also be dangerous when your flesh is exposed. Never fully dip your hand in cement because it will cause your skin burns! So always wear your gloves if you’re mixing concrete manually.
How much water should be added to the concrete mix?
The number of water matters when mixing concrete. Accurate measurements hold a significant place as it has the power to make or break the durability and quality of the concrete. A common error that most make is adding too much water into the mixture.
Take note that adding too much water will hugely impact the consistency of the concrete. It will make the finishing weak and brittle. Therefore, these kinds of mixtures have the tendency to crumble over time. If you feel the need to add water, 2 cups of water are the most ideal addition. If you’re still in a daze about how you’ll do it, here is a simple guide from The Spruce!
The Tip!
Always follow manufacturer instructions on how much water to add to concrete. Always start with less water and add more as needed to avoid weak concrete.
How you’ll mix the concrete?
The big question remains, what’s the proper way to mix concrete? If you’re thinking of some complicated process, we’ll uncomplicate things for you in eight easy steps! Here’s how you’ll do it…
- Spread a plastic sheet on the ground.
- Measure out the materials.
- Place the stone and sand into a pile on the sheet.
- Place the cement on top of the pile of sand and stone.
- Shovel the material in the pile to one side, create a new pile and repeat three times.
- Make a deep crater in the pile and add water.
- Fold the mix in from the sides.
- Continue to fold inwards and “chop” the pile to distribute water through the mix.
